Comic Panel Layout: How Grids, Hero Panels, and Gutters Control Pacing
Layout isn't decoration — it's timing. The size and number of panels on a page tell the reader how fast to read it. Here's how to use that on purpose.
Panel Size Is Screen Time
A reader spends roughly as long on a panel as it is big. That's the whole mechanism. Six small panels in a row read like six fast beats; one panel filling the page reads like a held shot. Nothing about the art changes — only the space it occupies — and the scene's tempo changes completely.
So before you write a single prompt, decide what the page is for. A page of argument between two characters wants density. A page where the door finally opens wants one image and a lot of silence around it. Most weak AI comic pages fail here, not at the art: every panel is the same size, so every moment carries the same weight, and the story reads flat.
The Four Layouts You Actually Need
- The grid (3×3, 2×3, 2×2). Even panels, even rhythm. The workhorse for dialogue, procedure, and anything where the reader should move steadily. A regular grid is also the thing you break — a layout only feels like a shock if the preceding pages established the norm.
- The hero panel. One full-width panel that owns its own row (or the whole page). Use it for establishing a location, a reveal, or a single moment of impact. One per page, at most. Two heroes on a page and neither is a hero.
- The wide span. A panel that takes two of three columns instead of one. Cheaper than a hero and useful for landscape framing — a car crossing a desert, two characters facing off across a table.
- The stagger.Rows of different densities — a wide, then three smalls, then a wide. This is how you accelerate and decelerate inside one page, and it's the most under-used layout by new creators.
How Many Panels Per Page?
There's no law, but there are working ranges. Traditional US comic pages tend to sit around 5–7 panels; more than nine on a standard page and panels get too small to carry a readable figure plus a balloon. Manga pages run a little tighter and lean harder on irregular shapes. Vertical scroll is a different animal. There is no page, so there is no cap: pacing comes from the vertical gap between panels instead of from panel size. Want a beat of dread? Leave a long stretch of empty scroll before the next panel. That empty space is the equivalent of the page turn.
Gutters: The Cheapest Pacing Tool
The gutter is the gap between panels, and it's where the reader does the work — the mental leap from one image to the next happens in that white space, not in the art. Practical rules:
- Be consistent. 0.125″–0.25″ for print, 8–12px for webtoon. Random gutter widths read as sloppiness, not intent.
- Wider gutter = bigger time jump. If minutes or hours pass, give the gap more room. Readers feel it even if they never notice it.
- Tight gutters compress time. Panels nearly touching read as continuous action — one motion split across three frames.
- Keep balloons out of gutters. A balloon crossing a gutter ties two panels into one beat. Do it deliberately or not at all.

The Page Turn Is a Punchline
In a printed or paged comic, the reader sees two pages at once. Everything on the right-hand page is visible before they read it; everything on the next spread is hidden. That makes the last panel before a turn the setup and the first panel after it the payoff. Put your reveals on the page after the turn, never in the bottom-right corner where the reader spoils it for themselves.
This is one of the few craft rules that vanishes entirely in vertical scroll — which is a real reason to decide your format before you plan pages, not after.
Building These Layouts in WildComiks

- Pick the format first. Webtoon, Western, or Manga — set once, and page packing, reading direction (manga lays out right-to-left), and page dimensions all follow from it.
- Mark a panel as a hero. Toggle full-width on any panel and it gets its own row on the page, pushing the panels around it into new rows.
- Set a column span. Give a panel a span of 2 and it takes two slots in its row — the wide shot without going full page.
- Force a page break. Mark the panel that should lead a fresh page, and the layout splits before it. This is how you land the page-turn reveal on purpose.
- Reading order is preserved. Panels stay in the order you wrote them no matter how they pack, so re-flowing a page never scrambles the story.
A Workable Default
If you're staring at a blank page: build a 2×3 grid, then upgrade exactly one panel — the most important beat on the page — to full width. That single decision turns a flat page into a paced one, and it takes about five seconds. Do that for twenty pages and you'll start seeing where the stagger and the page turn earn their keep.
Then export and read it at actual size. Panels that look fine at 200% on a monitor can be unreadable at 6.6 inches wide. If the page reads at thumbnail size, the layout is working.
