How to Make a Motion Comic

A motion comic is a comic that breathes — not a cartoon. The difference is how much you animate, and which panels you leave completely still.

What a Motion Comic Actually Is

A motion comic keeps the grammar of comics — panels, gutters, reading order, lettering — and adds a small amount of movement inside each panel. Rain falls. A coat shifts. Smoke drifts across a face. The camera creeps a few percent closer. The page is still a page; it just isn't frozen.

That restraint is the whole craft. Animate too much and you've made a bad cartoon: characters walking on stiff joints, mouths flapping out of sync, the uncanny wobble that image-to-video produces when you ask it for a full performance. Animate a little and you get something a still page can't do — atmosphere that holds while the reader looks.

The practical rule: motion should be something the reader notices second, not first.They should read the panel, then realise it's moving.

Which Panels to Animate

Not all of them. A motion comic where every panel moves is visual noise, and it's also the most expensive version of the file you could possibly make. Animate for a reason:

Reading Order Still Governs Everything

The mistake that ruins most motion comics is treating them as video first. They aren't. The reader still moves left-to-right, top-to-bottom (or right-to-left for manga format), panel by panel. Your timing has to respect that.

Sound, or the Deliberate Absence of It

Motion comics live on social feeds, which are muted by default. Design the piece to work silently — your lettering is the audio track. If you do add sound, keep it to ambience and a few accents rather than a full voice performance; voice acting raises the bar on lip-sync you deliberately chose not to animate, and audiences notice the mismatch instantly.

Making One in WildComiks

The motion comic export in the studio works from a comic you've already finished. There's no separate animation project — the panels on your canvas are the source.

  1. Build and letter the comic first. Generate your panels, place them in the layout you want, and add balloons. Animation is the last step, not the first — a panel you re-generate afterwards means re-animating it.
  2. Hit the motion comic export. Each finished panel is sent through image-to-video one at a time, then the clips are composited in your browser into a single video that uses the same panel packing and reading order as the PDF export. What you laid out is what plays.
  3. Let the format pick the shape.Clip aspect is snapped to the cell each panel is drawn into — wide and full-width cells animate 16:9, tall webtoon cells 9:16, everything else square — so the motion fills the frame it's going into instead of being letterboxed.
  4. Expect a mixed result, by design.Panels that fail to animate fall back to their still image inside the video rather than blocking the export. If nothing at all animated, the export stops and tells you why instead of handing you a silent slideshow labelled "motion comic".
  5. Save the video. It downloads as a WebM (or MP4 where the browser supports recording that container directly).

What It Costs You in Quota

Animating a panel is far more expensive to run than generating one, so motion has its own budget that's completely separate from your panel generations — using it never eats into your daily or monthly image quota.

Because of that budget, animate selectively on purpose. A six-panel page where two panels move is both a better motion comic and a cheaper one than a six-panel page where everything wobbles.

A Sensible First Attempt

Take one finished page. Pick your establishing shot and one held beat. Animate those two. Leave the impact panel and the dialogue-heavy panel completely still. Export, watch it muted, and ask the only question that matters: did the motion make the page easier to fall into, or did it pull your eye away from the story?
