How to Fix a Bad AI Comic Panel Without Regenerating It
The composition is right. The lighting is right. The hand has six fingers. Rerolling the whole panel throws away four good things to fix one bad one — here's the alternative.
Why Rerolling Is the Wrong First Move
When a panel misses, the reflex is to hit generate again. Sometimes that's correct. Usually it isn't, for two reasons.
The first is that a reroll changes everything. You don't get the same panel with better hands — you get a different panel. The framing shifts, the light moves, the expression you liked is gone. If the panel was 90% there, you just traded a known 90% for an unknown one, and you might reroll five times before you get back to where you started.
The second is that every attempt costs a generation. On the free tier that's 10 panels a day; on Creator it's 200 a month, on Studio 600. Three blind rerolls on one stubborn panel is a real dent in a day's work. Editing the broken region costs one generation too — but it only has to work once.
Triage First: Fix or Reshoot?
Masked editing (inpainting) regenerates the pixels inside a region you paint, and leaves everything outside it untouched. That single constraint tells you which problems it can solve. If the fix fits inside a shape you could draw a circle around, mask it. If the fix requires the panel to be arranged differently, reshoot it.
Mask it:
- A face that's the wrong expression — flat when it should be furious.
- Hands. Always hands.
- A prop that came out wrong, or a prop that should be there and isn't.
- Garbled text on a sign, a poster, a book spine.
- Background clutter competing with the subject.
- A costume detail that drifted — wrong jacket colour, missing scar.
Reshoot it:
- Wrong shot size or camera angle. You asked for a low-angle close-up and got a mid-shot.
- Wrong number of characters in frame.
- The pose or blocking is wrong — the character is facing away when the beat needs eye contact.
- The panel is fine but boring. That's a writing problem, not a pixel problem; change the direction in the script and generate again.
Thirty seconds of triage saves a lot of wasted attempts. The most common mistake is trying to mask your way out of a composition problem — you end up painting over half the panel, and a mask that big is just a reroll with extra steps.
How It Works in WildComiks
Open your comic in the writer, hover the panel you want to repair, and hit the ✎ face button in the corner of the image. That opens the edit canvas:
- Brush the region. Paint over the part you want replaced. What you paint shows up as a pink overlay — that pink area is exactly what gets regenerated, and nothing outside it changes. The brush size slider goes from a fine tip to a broad stroke, so you can outline a whole head or nick a single finger.
- Describe the replacement. One short line —
smiling face, looking at camera— in the prompt field. - Apply. The edit comes back in place of the old panel, at the same resolution, and the repaired version is what carries forward into your export.
Clear wipes the mask if you paint yourself into a corner. Nothing is committed until you apply.
Brush Technique Is 80% of the Result
The mask does more work than the prompt. Four rules that consistently separate a clean repair from an obvious patch:
- Overshoot the edge a little.Don't trace the broken thing exactly. Paint slightly past it so the model has room to blend the new pixels into the old ones. A mask that stops precisely at the wrist leaves a visible seam at the wrist.
- Mask whole shapes, not slivers.Fixing a bad hand means masking the entire hand plus a bit of forearm — not the two fingers that look wrong. The model can't redraw an anatomically sound hand if you only let it touch part of one.
- Keep the mask as small as the job allows.Every pixel you leave outside the mask is a pixel guaranteed to stay consistent. Small mask, high consistency. Half-panel mask, and you've reintroduced the drift you were trying to avoid.
- One problem per pass. Two things wrong in a panel? Two edits. A single mask covering a face on the left and a hand on the right forces the model to invent everything between them.
Prompt the Patch, Not the Panel
This is where most edits go sideways. The prompt describes what should exist inside the mask— not what the panel is about. The surrounding pixels already supply the art style, the lighting, and the palette; you don't need to restate them.
- Good:
clenched fist, knuckles forward - Good:
wide eyes, mouth open in shock - Bad:
a detective in a rain-soaked alley at night looking shocked— that's a panel prompt. Fed into a mask covering one face, it tries to fit an alley into a head.
Short and literal wins. Three to six words is usually the whole prompt. If you find yourself writing a sentence, the mask is probably too big.
When the Edit Still Won't Land
Give it three attempts, then change something structural rather than rerolling the same setup. In order of what to try:
- Reword the patch prompt — make it more literal and more physical.
- Resize the mask — usually bigger, with more surrounding context.
- Reshoot the panel — the problem was a composition problem after all.
One more thing worth knowing: the generator runs its own safety check on the result, and it occasionally false-trips on a completely innocent edit — faces and skin are the usual culprits. If an edit comes back refused, rewording the prompt or shrinking the mask almost always clears it. Nothing is written to your panel when that happens.
Where Editing Fits in the Workflow
Masked editing is a finishing tool, not a consistency tool. Getting the same character to look like themselves across a hundred panels is the job of a locked character reference and @-tags — the identity work happens before you generate, not after. Editing is for the last 5%: the expression that came out flat, the finger count, the sign that says nothing.
Used that way, it changes the economics of a page. Instead of a panel being pass or fail, most panels become pass-with-one-fix — and a comic you can actually finish.
