Comic Panel Transitions: What Changes Between Two Panels
Nothing happens inside a panel — panels are frozen. All the movement in a comic happens in the gaps, and the reader supplies it. What you actually control is how far you're asking them to jump.
When a comic reads as choppy, the panels are usually fine. The problem is between them. A reader looking at two panels automatically assumes they're connected and fills in whatever has to have happened in between — that gap-filling is the entire reading experience of comics, and it's the thing most beginner scripts leave to chance.
The useful way to think about it: every panel break is a question — what changed?— and the answer falls into one of six categories. The taxonomy below comes from Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics (1993), which is still the clearest breakdown anyone has written of what the gutter does.
The six jumps
- Moment-to-moment. Almost nothing changes — a hand opens, an eye blinks, a drop falls. The reader does no work at all, which makes time slow to a crawl. Cheap for the reader, expensive for you: it burns panels fast. Use it for a deliberate held beat, not for getting anywhere.
- Action-to-action.Same subject, next beat of what they're doing. This is the workhorse — most of your comic is this. It moves the story with a jump small enough that the reader never notices they made it.
- Subject-to-subject. Stay in the scene, cut to something else in it — the other person in the room, the gun on the table. This is your camera coverage. It only works if the reader already knows the geography, so it wants an establishing panel somewhere upstream.
- Scene-to-scene.New place, new time, or both. The biggest jump in normal use, and the one that needs a signpost: a caption box, an establishing shot, or an unmistakable visual change. Cut cold to a new location with no marker and the reader stalls for a second — and a stall is the one thing a page turn can't afford.
- Aspect-to-aspect. Nothing advances. You wander across details of one place or mood — rain on a window, a cold cup, a clock. Time stops being a line and becomes a room. Extremely powerful for atmosphere and dread, and the main reason a horror page feels different from an action page.
- Non-sequitur. No logical relationship at all. Rare, and it reads as either a mistake or as intent — nothing in between. If you use it, make sure the surrounding pages are controlled enough that the reader knows you meant it.
How far can you ask a reader to jump?
Further than you'd think, but not twice in a row. Practical limits from real pages:
- Action-to-action and subject-to-subject are free. Readers absorb these without noticing. Build your default sequences out of them.
- One big jump per page, signposted.A scene-to-scene cut costs attention. Pay for it with a caption or an establishing shot, and don't stack two of them back to back.
- Moment-to-moment only where the slowness is the point. Three panels of a door handle turning is tension. Three panels of someone walking across a room is a waste of a third of your page.
- Aspect-to-aspect needs room.One atmospheric detail panel reads as a mistake. Three or four in sequence read as mood. If you can't afford four panels, don't start.
Write the break, not the panels
The practical version of all this: when you're stuck on a sequence, stop looking at the panels and look at the seams. Go through each break and name what changed.
- Nothing changed? Delete one of the panels. Two panels showing the same information is the single most common way pages get bloated.
- Three things changed at once— new location, new characters, and a time skip? Insert a panel, or add a caption to carry the part the image can't.
- Every break is action-to-action for a whole page? The page will read flat and relentless. Break the rhythm with a subject-to-subject cut or a single held close-up.
In WildComiks script mode the break is explicit — a [PANEL: …]tag is exactly where you're asking the reader to jump. So the diagnostic is mechanical: read down your script, and at every [PANEL:]line, answer "what changed?" in one word. If you can't, that break isn't doing anything.
The page notices what you wrote
Transitions and layout are the same decision seen from two sides, so page assembly reacts to the kind of sequence you wrote. On export:
- Establishing, FULL, and SPLASH panels bleed to the page edge — the panels that carry a scene-to-scene jump get the visual weight that signposts it.
- Runs of consecutive action panels get slanted gutters, alternating direction so the page zig-zags. It takes a run of at least two — a lone tilted panel just looks like an error, so a single action beat stays square.
- A quiet close-up landing right after an action run floats borderless — the classic beat panel, the exhale after the hit. You get it by writing the sequence that earns it, not by asking for it.
Format changes this too. Webtoon pages skip the tilts entirely — diagonal cuts fight a vertical scroll — and lean on full-width panels instead. Vertical scroll also has no per-page panel ceiling, which is why aspect-to-aspect sequences feel so natural there: you can spend six panels on rain and a window without blowing a page budget. A western page tops out around nine panels and a manga page around eight, so on those formats every moment-to-moment beat is competing for space with the plot.
A quick diagnostic
Take any page you've already made and write the transition type next to each break. Two things usually fall out immediately: a stretch where the same type repeats five times (that's your flat patch), and a break where you can't name the type at all (that's your confusing patch). Fixing those two is usually the whole edit.
Try it on one page
The fastest way to internalize this is to build the same six-panel scene twice — once entirely action-to-action, once with a subject-to-subject cut and a held close-up in the middle — and read them back to back.
